While people speculate about it,1 we don’t think we personally have the right to pass judgment on his relationship with Jesus through the Holy Spirit. God is the Judge, and He gave us Scripture as the standard against which all people will be measured.
So it is necessary to look at what Scripture says, because its importance can hardly be over stated. To miss eternal life and be separated from God will not be easy. The worst is that once our eternal destiny is ‘fixed,’ it can never be changed.
Jesus gave clear guidelines on what God expects:
- Words alone don’t have much of an effect. They must be supported by what we do, “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” 2
- It is not an effortless journey that smoothly sails into heaven’s harbour. It requires effort, ’Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to.’ 3
- We have to persevere, ‘Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.’ 4
When they hear this, some people might just surrender because it seems impossible. Yet for the Father, nothing is impossible. Romans 8:9 reveals God’s secret weapon for success, ‘You, however, are not controlled by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.’ With the Holy Spirit inside us, we cannot fail, especially as the angels cheer us on.
Jesus knows what Mr Obama’s relationship to Him is. We cannot answer it, but we will know one day. All the dead, great and small, will appear before the judgment seat of Christ.5 Then we will know who the real Christians are. We don’t need to judge now. God, in His wisdom, will reveal all things for everyone to see.
