Satan’s long war against God, Part 2

Part 2, One of Satan’s revenge strategies

God has His Kingdom.  He created angels and people to be part of His Kingdom.

As Satan wanted to be like God, he also needed a kingdom.  When he rebelled against God, he got a following among the angels.  They are the demons, his workers.

Then he also wanted a following among the people.  His opportunity came in the Garden of Eden.  He convinced Adam and Eve to disobey God.  He trapped humanity.  It suited Satan very well.

There was just one tiny problem for Satan and that was God’s promise,

‘…He [the seed of the woman], will crush your head.’  Genesis 3:15

As head of a new kingdom in rebellion against God, it did not go down well.  He had to deal with it.  It could not be that difficult to outsmart God!

The promised Redeemer would be born of a woman.

God said the ‘seed of a woman.’  Which woman would it be?  The devil did not know, so he decided on a strategy to counter God’s promise.  Satan knew people were different from angels.  Yet, with his abilities he could send his angels to take the form of men and marry women.  Then he could pollute the human bloodline.

He planned that his demons marry women and produce ‘mixed’ blood offspring.  Satan did just that.  His angels (demons), had to leave their assigned place in heaven and cohabit with humans,

‘When men began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose.’  Genesis 6:1-2

As if God did not know about it.  When the fallen angels, demons, intermarried with women, the generation became extremely wicked.  God decided to destroy the whole generation.  That was the only way to make sure no ‘mixed’ blood offspring would be left.

One family kept themselves separate.

They were Noah, his wife and three sons with their wives.  God told Noah to build an ark.  He did it and he and his family were saved.  The rest all perished in the worldwide flood.

In case some people argue that God is very cruel, may we point out the following:

  • It took Noah at least 70 years to build the ark.
  • He was a preacher of righteousness.
  • Nobody believed him, yet God could not have turned away anybody who wanted to join Noah on the ark.
  • The responsibility for children who died in the flood rests securely on the shoulders of the fathers.  They were supposed to lead their families in the ways of God.  If Abel knew about God’s ways, surely the descendants also knew about it.

God did send the flood and the whole wicked generation perished.  Only Noah and his family were saved through the ark.

God considered it a grievous sin that those angels transgressed their creation place.

  • They were taken captive and are in gaol from that time till the end,
  • ‘And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home – these He has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the Great Day.’  Jude 6
  • ‘For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment….’  2 Peter 2:4
  • Satan did not drown in the flood.  He is an angel.  His other angels did not drown either.  So evil did not stop with the flood.  Noah and his family continued to fill the earth as God intended Adam and Eve to do.  Regardless, the Noah family were again of original Adam bloodstock.  They were pure humans as God intended.

  • Scripture reveals that the devil’s first plan failed spectacularly.  But he never forgot that defeat.  In the next part of this series we want to touch on his efforts to convince the Church that the universal flood never happened.  That is his ‘revenge’ for the defeat.
  • Also, Satan knows that those who deny God’s miracles as described in the Bible  will never see God’s face personally.  They will never see God’s greatest miracle – the new heaven and earth, and the marriage of the Lamb.  That explains the incessant war against the supernatural power of God.

Many of us were taught that the sons of God referred to the ‘godly’ line of Seth, and the daughters of man to the ‘ungodly’ line of Cain.  Yet the ‘daughters of man’ would be both Sethites and Cainites.   In many other places in the Bible angels are called ‘sons of God (always male).’  Reference: J D Sarfati, The Genesis Account,Creation Book Publishers, 2015, p 474-480

God’s plans cannot be thwarted

Our great, glorious God’s plan is to establish an eternal Kingdom of Peace and Love on the new heaven and earth.  There He will live with all people who accepted and loved Him this side of the grave.  He will be our God and we will be His people.  The 66 books of the Bible contain this revelation of God to man.

It took us many years to understand it.  After decades in the church, we realized that we were not ready to meet God.  We closed our business and began to seek God full time.  It is during these years that our wonderful heavenly Father started to reveal more and more of His plan to us.

In the process we learnt that:

  1. Believers in God live as strangers in hostile surroundings in this life.  Scripture tells us that we are aliens and will not be popular with the world:

    • ‘All these people [like Noah, Abraham and others] were still living by faith when they died….  And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth.’ 1
    • ‘To God’s elect, strangers in the world….’ 2
    • ‘If the world hates you [Jesus’ disciples], keep in mind that it hated me first.’ 3

2.   We live as aliens on this earth, because the ruler of the world is a very evil liar and             murderer:

    • ‘…the devil…was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him.  When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.’  4
    • ‘…the whole world is under the control of the evil one.’ 5

3.   So it looks as if the odds are stacked against the followers of Jesus.  So we had some questions:

    • Will God accomplish what He promises?
    • Will He be able to get rid of this world ruler?

To find out, we want to look at some very specific promises of God which were all opposed by the devil, and see what the outcome was.  That should give us an idea of what we can expect at the end of this age.

4.   We are going to look at:

  • God’s promise in Genesis 3:15.  This is the promise that, if fulfilled, will mean God’s plan will succeed, no matter what.  We want to trace the events flowing from this basic promise, namely God’s promises to:
    • Abraham
    • David
    • Jesus

God’s ‘big’ promise in Genesis 3:15

Very early in the Bible’s history, God promised the devil,

  • ’…I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring [seed] and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.’ 6
  • Obviously it does not apply to a physical snake.  The enmity between the offspring of the woman and the serpent has to do with someone who will be born of a woman who will crush the head of the devil.
  • God addressed the literal snake when He said, ’Cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals!  You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.’ 7 That was meant for the real snake, who must have looked different from the snakes of today who are cursed because of their ancestor.
  • God distinguished between the snake and the serpent (Satan) and judged each one individually.

What did Satan make of God’s ‘promise?’

He, the exalted, fallen angel with his wisdom and pride, was not in the least impressed.  After all, he successfully initiated a full scale angelic defection from God’s Kingdom and got the first human couple to obey him instead of God.  So does God want to tell him that some person, born of a woman, will someday crush his head?  Yet he knew God and realized that he will have to be on the watch for someone to be born of a woman.

Genesis 3:15 is basically a promise that a Redeemer would arrive to free humans from the tyranny of the devil.  The great dragon, that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, would eventually be crushed. 8  This was not a pleasant thought to the devil.  So he designed a strategy to destroy this promise of God.

The devil’s first major offensive – against the seed (offspring) of the woman

The devil knew that the key to thwart God’s promise lies with women, someone who would give birth to one who would be victorious over the ‘serpent.’  All he had to do was mess up the ‘seed’ of the woman.  In his evil mind he conceived a plan: get his demons to intermarry with women.  So he planned that his demons leave their assigned place, cohabit with humans, marry women and produce ‘mixed’ blood offspring.  This he did:

  • ‘When men began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful and they married any of them they chose.’ 9

If the devil’s plan succeeded, he could tell God that the blood of the Messiah is tainted by his demonic influences.  Therefore demons should be included in salvation, or no human being could be saved.  Either way he wins.  However, God decided to get rid of the mixed blood humans.  A universal flood would be used to destroy all humans, except Noah and his family.  They were untainted by the demonic influence.  The flood proved that the devil’s carefully designed strategy failed.  Would the devil try his luck again?  No, since:

  • God promised never again to destroy the earth by a flood.
  • God punished the angels who took part in this ploy:
    • ‘And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home – these He has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the Great Day.’ 10
    • ‘…God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment….’ 11

These fallen angels who left their assigned positions of authority (they were not created to physically mingle with humans), were treated differently from Satan’s demons (fallen angels). At present they are still roaming around, harassing humans.  The devil probably realized that his demonic host will just be depleted if he tries again to get his demons to marry women. So he admitted defeat and just keeps on trying to thwart God’s plan of an eternal Kingdom. He still has millions of demons doing his bidding:

    • ‘What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth?  Have you come to destroy us?.’ 12
    • ‘…and Jesus healed many who had various diseases.  He also drove out many demons, but He would not let the demons speak because they knew who He was.’ 13
    • ‘The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.’ 14

The first offensive of the devil against God was a complete failure.

The Noah Jesus connection

The story of Noah who built the ark to save his family from the flood1 is a proof that every Noah, Jesus and searchsingle family matters to God. The flood was God’s judgement on sinful people, but He saved one family, instead of destroying them with the rest. There was nothing to prevent God from destroying all people and creating humans afresh (it is interesting that God never added any new kinds of life after the six days of creation).

The reason God saved Noah and his family is because Noah, walked with God. ‘Walked’ shows that it was not a static process, but an active one. Today we would describe it as an active relationship with Jesus (the Word) through the Holy Spirit.

The ark that saved Noah and his family was not his idea. God instructed him to build it according to His specifications. Today we read in the Bible that God will again judge sinful humanity, but there is once again a way out. God sent Jesus to die for our sins. He is the New Testament ‘ark’ that will save us from God’s judgement. The details of how that works are found in the Bible. God provides the ‘specifications,’ not we.

It was a process for Noah to build the ark. It was not something that was showered on him. He had to apply himself and spend the time to build. Today we see it as a relationship with the Father and the Son, through Bible reading and prayer, with the help of the Holy Spirit. You need to apply yourself and spend the time to seek the Lord. It is a basic part of believers’ lives.

Noah had to obey God’s instructions to build the ark, to be saved from the water judgement. The key to understand God’s plan to save you and your family is that you need to obey Him. It is not enough to only confess your sins, receive forgiveness and then you are a child of God on your way to ‘heaven.’ In God’s Kingdom, obedience to the perfect Ruler is what will give you success. Adam failed to follow God’s instructions, but through Jesus we can be repeatedly forgiven when we fail. The Holy Spirit was sent to teach, lead and help us to obey.

We see through Noah’s history that salvation is past, present and future. Noah was saved because he was righteous and walked with God (his past life). He built the ark according to specifications and was saved from a watery death (his ‘present’ life). He experienced the ‘new’ earth (his future after the judgement). Today we have the promise: if we accept God’s righteousness through Jesus and walk with God with the help of the Holy Spirit, we will be saved from eternal judgement in hell. We will experience the new heavens and earth2 where God will be our God, and we will be His people.’3
