The billion gold pieces Book

Many years ago when I came to repentance and joined a small church, the people told me to read the Bible.  I duly bought a Bible and began to read.  When I think back it would have greatly shortened my learning curve if they told me what a precious book the Bible is.  The Book itself tells us about its worth,

‘The Law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.’  Psalm 119:72

That statement caused me to think long and deep because we all know how much gold is worth.  However I also realised it is not only about my love for Scripture and faith in God.  If I don’t persevere and overcome, I might miss those promised thousands of pieces of silver and gold.  God revealed,

‘He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white.  I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and His angels.’  Revelation 3:5

John also reported that the billions of dollars (or whatever currency) begins when he,

“…heard a loud voice from heaven saying, ‘Now the dwelling of God is with men, and He will live with them.  They will be His people [those whose names are written in the Book of Life] and God Himself will be with them and be their God.’  Revelation 21:3

Just think, the New Jerusalem will be a cube with dimensions of 2,200 kilometres or 1,400 miles,

‘…and the city [is] of pure gold, as pure as glass.’  Revelation 21:18b

That is big money and it is up for grabs for anyone who is interested.  The generosity of our great God is marvellous and His miraculous book reveals it all.  Wow!

What a story!

Ever contemplated this astounding proclamation in the book of Revelation,

‘And he [an angel] carried me [John] away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.’  Revelation 21:10

A city will descend from heaven to earth?  How big is that city?

‘The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide.  He [the angel] measured the city with a rod and found it to be 12,000 stadia in length, and as wide and high as it is long.’  Revelation 21:16

That means it will be a cube of about 1,400 miles or 2,200 kilometres.  Imagine a city that size that descends from heaven to settle on earth (probably on a mountain).

Amazingly its walls and streets are of pure gold and precious stones.  Its gates are pearls and a river flows from the throne of the Father and the Lamb.  On both sides of the river grows the tree of life that produces its crop every month (see Revelation 21 and 22).

Jesus says about the revelation God gave Him,

‘I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book.  And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.’  Revelation 22:18,19

What Jesus says is, don’t mess with this revelation.  It comes from the highest authority there can be, namely the Creator God.  He is all-knowing, planned it all and He guarantees what is written in the book of Revelation.

Our conclusion

We will see God’s face all the time.  We will have His Name written on our foreheads.  Revelation 22:4  We will be blessed beyond all blessings.  How?

‘Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy in this book.’  Revelation 22:7b

Is the New Jerusalem real and literal?

According to Scripture, the New Jerusalem will be a cube of about 2,200 kilometers or 1,400 miles.  That is massive.  The biggest city of our time doesn’t even come close to that.  Is it possible?  Will there really be a city of that size on the new earth?

The first thing is, can we trust the information about this big city?  We can, because of the introduction to the book of Revelation,

‘The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants what must soon take place.  He made it known by sending His angel to His servant John, who testifies to everything he saw, that is, the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ.’  Revelation 1:1-2

Look at the emphasis:

  • ‘The revelation of Jesus Christ.’
  • ‘God gave Jesus the revelation. ‘
  • ‘The angel was sent to John.’
  • ‘John testified about the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ.‘

One cannot get a more precise definition that God spoke.  We can trust the revelation of Jesus to the hilt.

  • Look at what He promises His people:

‘Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away.’  Revelation 21:1

  • The apostle Peter, inspired by the Holy Spirit, foretold,

‘But in keeping with His promise, we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.’  2 Peter 3:13

  • God is adamant that on this ‘New Earth’ there will be a ‘New Jerusalem,’

‘I saw the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God….’  Revelation 21:2a

God also has a city on this present earth,

‘…I have chosen Jerusalem for my Name to be there, and I have chosen David to rule my people Israel.’  2 Chronicles 6:6

There is an interesting parallel,

  • As God has a present earth, He will have a future new earth.
  • As He has an earthly Jerusalem, so He will have a New Jerusalem.

Question: is a city of that size possible?  Why not?  If God can create the new world, He can create a massive city.  God is not into the ‘small.’  His ‘Garden of Eden’ will be the whole new earth.  His future city will accommodate all His people.  And the best!  We will love our Lord Jesus to bits in His City.
