2018 Resolution

It is usual for people to make new year’s resolutions.  This year we trust the Lord to help us give more attention to His very wonderful, yet in some instances baffling book, the Bible.  All followers of Jesus are completely dependent upon Scripture, but sometimes we forget exactly what a supernatural product the Bible is.

What a unique book!

On the one hand it is an ordinary book of paper and ink.  On the other hand it has changed the lives of more people than any other book ever written, because it contains the personal words of God to mankind.  The Bible truly is a supernatural product, not of man, but of God.

The Bible’s unparalleled introduction

  • What merely human writer would begin a book with, ‘In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth?’ 1  Who is God, and where did Moses (commonly accepted as the writer) who was not trained in theology or modern science, get the insight to make such a claim?
  • How did he know that an omnipotent Creator God made the universe with its galaxies, our solar system, planet Earth and all its myriad lifeforms, in six twenty-four hour days?
  • Genesis 1 gives us a clue that the Bible is not only about the natural but also about the supernatural: the wonderful realisation that we have a Father, a Creator God, a King who cares and loves His creation.

Extraordinary origin

  • No human can design a book like the Bible.  Many have tried, but none of them have had the life changing effects of the Bible.  It has influenced entire nations over the ages.  Why? Because it is inspired by the wonderful God, the Holy Spirit.
  • The 66 books were written over a period of 1,400 years.  The approximately 40 different writers (all Jews, except Luke, a Greek) lived in different parts of Israel and its neighbouring countries at different times in history.  They all wrote under the influence of the invisible, yet all-knowing Holy Spirit.

The Bible’s strange effect

  • Multitudes have studied and still study this marvellous book, while others spend their time and energy to debunk it, like famous atheists Richard Dawkins, PZ Myers, Sam Harris, Lawrence Krauss, et cetera.  They love nothing more than to challenge believers and spew hatred on God, the Bible and the Church.  Yet it is to no avail, because the Bible is still around and still changes people’s lives on a daily basis.
  • World leaders through the ages tried to destroy it, like the Roman emperors, Communism, Islam and atheism.  Civilisations come and go, yet the Bible prevails.  God remains on His throne in heaven in all His glory until He will establish His throne in the New Jerusalem.  The impotent crusades of His haters will not change one whit of His plan to establish His Son, the Bridegroom, and His Bride, the Church, on the new earth.
  • No barrier, like the Iron Curtain, Bamboo Curtain, Oil Sheiks or Atheist Walls can ever stop the influence of the powerful Word of God.  Efforts to get rid of the Bible are destined to fail consistently.

Scripture explains what we see around us.

  • God ‘exalted above all things [His] name and [His] word.’ 2  Without the Bible we cannot understand what life is about.
  • For example the abuse Israel suffers (the United Nations and other nations, as well as many Muslim countries attempt to destroy Israel and annihilate the Jews).
  • The Jewish nation gives us an indication of how God preserves His people.  They were scattered throughout the world for almost two thousand years, but He protected them as a distinct nationality.  In 1948 the nation of Israel was once again established in the country God promised to their ancestor Abraham.
  • We never have to fear that God will fail with His grand program to gather people from all over the world to become the citizens of His Kingdom.

The Bible is not just an ordinary book about some far off deity.

  • No, it is about an Almighty God who calls people to become citizens of that fantastic country that will never disappear or fade away. 3
  • What a glorious hope of an exciting eternal future in the presence of the Most High, with free food, lodging, health, holidays, et cetera!  It is mind boggling that the Ruler of the Universe takes notice of small, insignificant, ordinary people.  He does not particularly favour the powerful and wealthy, but all those who come to Him and seek Him in humility.
  • The apostle Paul wrote, inspired by the Holy Spirit, ‘I am not ashamed of the Gospel, for it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.’ 4   We want to add, ‘We are not ashamed of the Bible, for it is the source of untold riches and blessings for those who take the trouble to investigate it.’

The Bible’s contents have never been updated and never will be.  Yet it has been translated into many languages and new translations come out all the time.  They are based on the original Hebrew and Greek manuscripts.  Despite the work of some theologians like Bart Ehrman who like to cast doubt on Scripture, the Bible still changes the lives of millions of people.  Millions still love the Book.  Millions still live by the Book.  Many give their lives for the Book.  What a Book!

God and same sex marriage

Justin Lee of the The Gay Christian Network has an excellent article on why God blesses same-sex marriages.  Yet someone who uses the Bible to support a certain issue, should be consistent in his exegesis.

# Should he include verse 11?

Among others, he discusses the very contentious 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 passage:  ‘Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Do not be deceived [don’t believe lies]: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers not male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the Kingdom of God.’  In his attempt to explain away the offence of ‘male prostitutes and homosexual offenders,’ he leaves out the verse that follows.

Verse 11 says, ‘And that is what some of you were [referring to 9&10].  But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of God.’  It means that some of the members of the church in Corinth came out of sinful lifestyles, but they were changed by the powerful blood of Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

#  Did the Holy Spirit err?

Why does Mr Lee not give the same amount of attention to verse 11 as he does to verses 9 &10?  Is it only to ‘justify’ same sex marriages?  Does he insinuate that the Holy Spirit erred because He didn’t know that the ‘homosexual offenders’ refers to a Greek Roman problem in ancient times?

#  Does the Bible misrepresent God’s design of marriage?

Scripture is very ‘one-sided’ when it discusses marriage.  Ephesians 5:22-33 bases the marriage relationship on Jesus the Bridegroom and His Bride, the Church.  Husband and wife are a shadow or reflection of Jesus and the Church.  Colossians 3:18-19 and 1 Peter 3:1-7 also mention only male/female marriages.  Does that mean the Bible misrepresents the truth because it doesn’t include same-sex marriages?

#  Should we absolve all the offenders in the list?

If you are consistent, what about the idolaters, adulterers, thieves, swindlers, et cetera, in the 1 Corinthians 6 list?  Does the passage mean what it says, or is a thief not a thief, or an adulterer something else?

If you begin to chop and change Scripture and don’t check with other passages that discuss the same issue, you make the Bible a useless guide to the Kingdom of God.  So why refer to the Bible at all?

Can God be blasphemed?

With reference to the events in Paris with Charlie Hebdo, (link) Love your enemiessomeone wrote that only the God of the Bible gave the command that blasphemers should be stoned, the Koran is silent about it. In Leviticus 24:10-16 God does say the blasphemer must be stoned.

The principle about when the Old Testament laws should be applied in our times is that if a law is not repeated in the New Testament, it no longer applies today (link). The blasphemy law of the Old Testament is not repeated in the New Testament. Jesus did warn that blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.1 Yet there is not a word about stoning, burning or punishing.

In Islam blasphemy is impious utterance or action against Allah, Mohammad or anything to do with Islam. The Quran and the Hadith condemn blasphemy, but they don’t specify a punishment for it. Contrary to the claim that Allah did not wish worldly punishment for blasphemers in the Koran, the opposite happens in real life.

  • Salman Rushdie wrote the book, Satanic Verses, published in 1988 in the UK. The Muslims were angry, because Rushdie wrote a novel about the verses that were removed from the Quran because they said the devil deceived Mohammed to include them.2 So they bombed many bookshops that sold his book, and Khomeini issued a fatwa to kill Rushdie.  He was protected by the police, but had to move many times.
  • There were threats and protests against the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten for publishing cartoons lampooning the Prophet Muhammad in 2005.
  • There was the massacre at Charlie Hebdo on 9 January 2015, and a previous attempt to burn down the building.
  • At least six churches have been looted or burned in Niamy, Niger. There were also protests in Karachi (Pakistan), Khartoum (Sudan) and Algiers (Algeria). This was in response to Charlie Hebdo’s latest edition with a picture of a weeping prophet Muhammad.3  Nobody knows why the Christian churches are burned for what Charlie Hebdo depicts.

Why do Christians not retaliate when their Lord is insulted? It is because Jesus taught us that we are to love our enemies.4 Even when the Pharisees and others did their best to insult Jesus and curse Him, He still prayed, ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.’ 5

Conclusion: God does not need His followers to protect His honour and name. He will not use His followers to defend Him. They are needed to spread the message about the Kingdom. God is unassailable in heaven, eternal, glorious and everlasting. Sticks and stones cannot hurt God.

NB! Please note the difference between the God of the Bible and Allah. The God of the Bible is a Trinity, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Islam denies it, because their ‘God,’ Allah, does not have a son. They are not the same.
