4 Bible truths about a local or world wide flood

The film, ‘Noah,’ once again drew people’s attention to the Genesis flood. Local floodThe Bible says the water covered the whole earth, but some people canvas that it was a local flood. That leaves us with the following perplexing questions:

  • Why did the animals board the ark? In a local flood, they could have migrated to safe places.
  • Why does Scripture affirm that all life outside the ark perished. It is impossible with a local flood.
  • Why did God give the rainbow as a sign that He will never again destroy the whole earth by water? Surely He didn’t mean a local flood, because that happens often.

If you chop and change parts of the Bible it affects other parts. It is called The Domino Principle: the 66 books of the Bible are interconnected; they don’t stand in isolation; if you scrap one Bible truth, others begin to crumble. By the universal flood God demonstrated His intention to judge all people, not only a certain group. If the flood was local, 3 Bible truths must go:

  1. The White Throne Judgement must go. There is a connection between the judgement by water in the past, and judgement in the future by fire, ‘By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgement and the destruction of ungodly men.’ 1  If God’s judgement by water was local, why will His judgement by fire be universal?  If the fire judgement will be local, many people will still be alive after the fire. The Bible says ‘the dead great and small stood before God’s throne to be judged.2 So all those who will be alive will not appear at the judgement. That means judgement cannot take place. Scrap the judgement.
  2. The hope of a new heaven and earth must go. If the flood was local and the fire will be local, how will the heavens and earth be totally renewed? God will bring the new out of the ashes of the old, ‘…But in keeping with His Word, we are looking forward to a new heaven and earth.’ 3 This will happen after the earth is destroyed by fire.  A local flood means a local fire. Scrap the hope of an a new heaven and earth.
  3. Jesus as the Truth must go. Jesus said, ‘Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.’ 4 According to Jesus, all life perished, except life forms on the ark.  Did Jesus lie? If He lied here, why do you expect that He talked the truth at all other times? He said He came to testify to the truth. 5 A lier cannot testify to the truth. Scrap Jesus.
  4. If you scrap Jesus, you scrap Him as the Creator. That means, scrap the Bible.

Denying the universal flood eventually leads to scrapping the whole Bible. That demonstrates the extreme danger of changing God’s Word.

Conclusion

Some people believe they can chop and change Scripture, but God gave us His revelation as a ‘fixed’ body of facts. He does not ask us to ‘improve’ it or ‘improvise.’ Scripture stands despite educated people’s opinions. The flood covered all the high mountains under the entire heavens. 7  The fire will also be universal. It will engulf everything and afterwards God will renew it all, beautifully prepared for His faithful, chosen followers.

Fossils prove that Noah’s flood was real

Many people today believe that the world-wide Genesis flood is a mythical story Fossilswritten in the mythical Bible. If you want to find answers about the Genesis flood in the secular world (Wikipedia would be a good example), forget it. It is just accepted as a default position that most things described in the Bible never happened. Because people believe evolution, there is no place for the Creator God in their thinking.

So where would the idea of a universal catastrophic flood come from that so much money was spent on the Noah film ($125 million)? How can we know whether the flood was real, so real that a non-believer made a film about it?  The question we should ask ourselves is, what evidence would a universal flood leave behind?

  • The Bible says that all living organisms, except those on the ark, drowned. The flood was not caused by tranquil rain over forty days. ‘All of the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened.’ 1 The rotation of the earth caused very strong currents. A tremendous mixing of water and soil took place, which was deposited all over the planet. The living organisms in the water and land were covered with layers of sediment laden soil (silt). Large numbers must have been buried alive. Oxygen was excluded and the sediment exerted pressure. That caused them to fossilise quickly.  Today there are millions of fossils all over the earth. Fossils are relics that point to the world-wide flood.
  • Fossils do not form in the way some text books explain, namely that a dinosaur died (near a river), and slowly decayed. Its bones were slowly covered with thin layers of sediment over a long period of time (evolutionists believe things happened very slowly). It is difficult to believe that it happened like that, because some dinosaurs are massive. In addition, why would other organisms not devour the carcass and scatter its bones long before they were covered with sediment and turned to stone? Why did the millions of buffalo killed on the plains of America not fossilise over time? It is because fossilisation needs fast burial, exclusion of oxygen and protection from organisms that feed on the carcasses. Those were the exact conditions during Noah’s flood.
  • There are exquisitely preserved fossils. For example, there are large numbers of Cambrian fossils especially from Canada and China (many sea creatures ), fishes, leaves, worms and insects that decay very quickly. They had to be buried quickly to fossilise.
  • Many fossil graveyards have been found. Do animals or fish go to a certain place in large numbers and die there together? Do we ever see that in nature? No. It needs a catastrophe to wash many animals together and bury them suddenly to cause fossil graveyards. That happened during Noah’s flood.

Fossils, found all over the world in sedimentary layers, are evidence that there must have been a massive watery catastrophe that covered the whole earth.  Fossils are a proof of the universal flood.

Russel Crowe and the terrible God

Russell Crowe, who plays the role of Noah in producer, Darrel Aronofsky’s film of that name, God not to judgeappeared in an interview on YouTube.
He said many people, including babies and children, were killed in the flood in Noah’s day. With that he implied that God, who ordered the deluge, killed the innocent with the guilty.

To understand it better, let us look at the situation in more detail. After the fall of Adam and Eve who ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, all people had a conscience. Knowledge of good and evil became universal. People know the difference (even up till today). Most people chose to do evil and it pained God. The reason is that in Genesis 2 God interacted with the first couple and there was peace and happiness. God wants what we call the Trinitarian Love Relationship. The Trinity existed eternally in peace and happiness, and God wants the same for people made in His image. God plans an eternal Kingdom where He will rule over His people in love and righteousness. His country will be the new heavens and earth.

Yet the people, influenced by the devil, chose evil. Was God justified in taking action to destroy them all in the world-wide flood? Before you answer, please consider the following scenario first: if you live in a country, province, city or suburb, where there are police officers who patrol the neighbourhood, will you ask that they abolish the judicial system? Do you prefer it if there are criminals, drug lords, rapists, drunken drivers, thieves and many other law breakers in your community? Why should you deprive them of their livelihood and pleasures? Why are their actions wrong? Why do you care if your child is killed by a drunken driver, entrapped by drug dealers, raped, or whatever?

That is the dilemma that faced God. Should He leave people to destroy the lives of others? If you think sin has no cost, please go and see what a murdered person looks like, or a person who died from a drug overdose. The point we want to make is, if you want to criticise God, begin in your own area. Will you allow all criminal activity? Yet people expect God to save all people and judge none.

Which country does not have a judicial system?  If you live in a country with a judicial system and law enforcement, before you criticise God, get out of your safe environment. Go and live among the criminals. Then you can judge God. Before you do that, say nothing.

God’s judgement is right and fair. The parents of that flood generation (and for that matter all parents) will be held accountable for how they cared for and taught their children. It is our opinion that children under the age of accountability will be in heaven. If God spared all the babies and young children, there would have been thousands of them. Who would have cared for them?

What is Crowe demonstrating? His lack of knowledge of the Bible. The wicked, violent people in Noah’s day had time to repent all the time that he was building the ark. It is inconceivable that the people did not ask why he built such a large boat? It did not take him 8 years as in the film. Some scholars claim that he built for 70 years. Others claim that it was 120 years. Regardless, Noah was a preacher of righteousness (Hebrews 11:7), the exact opposite of producer, Aronofsky’s Noah.
