The strange times we live in

As we look at the news, we understand that we live in strange times.  It is a time in which leaders are deposed and wars and coups abound.  Nations are restless, people riot, things happen at alarming speed, et cetera.

We want to concentrate on one strange aspect of our times.

It concerns a certain book, called the Bible.  That book tells us there is an Almighty God.

  • Yet the world says that God is a myth (think Richard Dawkins).
  • They tell us the Bible is ‘a product of man, not of God’ (think Dan Brown and The DaVinci Code).
  • They tell us the writers of the Bible were backwoodsmen who were uneducated and unscientific (think Richard Dawkins again and many of God’s enemies).
  • They tell us the Bible is just another book among the religions of the world.  Therefore it is of no consequence.  We can all do without that Cosmic Tyrant, God (think atheists and other haters of the Bible).

Yet, and here is the anomaly.

  • The very first verse in the Bible, Genesis 1:1, says, ‘In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.’  Now, if the Bible is just a book, and God a myth who only gives Christians a crutch, why did a ‘cottage industry’ of magnificent size spring up around this verse?
  • This ‘cottage industry’s’ sole intent and purpose is to disprove that verse.  It is the ‘evolution industry’ with its massive investment in writers, researchers, laboratories, news media, science journals, education laws, and many others.
  • Most people are aware of this massive effort to undo the first verse of the Bible.

The question we want to answer is, what is behind it all?

Who is desperate enough to convince people that:

They are just evolved apes that developed from an unknown ape-like ancestor?

  • They have to accept that there is no life after death.  They should not even question it.  Their genes are those of an evolved animal, so when they die that is also the end of them.
  • They don’t have a free will to make the choice the Bible presents.  Yet free will is permissible when they decide where to work, what clothes to wear, food to eat, or whatever.

Genesis 1:1 is even offensive in the theological world, the Church.

  • Many, many followers of Jesus side with the world and claim that Genesis 1 is nonsense.  There is no way that God created in six days.  It happened by chance over billions of years.
  • The question is why would Christians deny this clear demonstration of God’s omnipotence and wisdom?

Why is Genesis 1:1 so important that there is so much effort to disprove it?

  • It is the best proof that there is a ruler over the world who hates God.  He is called the deceiver, ‘The great dragon was hurled down – that ancient serpent [Genesis 3:1] called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray.  He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.’ 1
  • Here on earth, the devil and his angels oppose God’s plan.  Ephesians 6:12 says, ‘For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, agains the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.’

If God was not powerful enough to create the first universe in 6 days,

  • There can be no new heavens and earth, ‘But in keeping with His promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.’ 2
  • There is no hope that Revelation 21-22 can be true.  Then the Bible’s message of eternal bliss and happiness in God’s presence, is ‘a pie in the sky.’
  • There can be no big bang to end this present creation and usher in the new heaven and earth, as described in 2 Peter 3:10, ‘But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.  The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.’
  • There can be no cosmic catastrophes, as in Revelation 8:6-13.  Hail and fire mixed with blood will be hurled on earth, a huge blazing mountain will be thrown into the sea, a blazing star will fall on a third of the rivers and springs of water and a third of the sun, moon and stars will be darkened.

The ruler of this world, the devil, knows God’s power and plans for an eternal Kingdom very well.  He lost his opportunity to be part of it.  So he wants as many people as possible to follow his disastrous way.  To achieve that he attacks the central core of Scripture – God’s omnipotence to create the foundation of what will eventually be the new heavens and earth.

The most exciting journey of our lives

As firm believers in the Bible and God, we might be accused of rejecting evolution a priori. The quest: did Darwin burn the Bible? copy This has the implicit accusation that we did not investigate the evidence for evolution. No, we rejected it because of our faith in the Scriptures and our investigation of the ‘science’ of evolution. Our attitude is the same as Luke’s who wrote, …since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus [reader].1 Orderly, here, does not imply a precise textbook account. It means giving Theophilus an idea about the life of Jesus, His Kingdom and what that means. In our day, it includes thorough research into the claims of evolution, and how they pertain to the Bible.

In the way I grew up there was nothing that influenced me to be a Christian, or to think that the Bible is a special book. When I became a follower of Jesus, my understanding was limited to the Gospel message: Jesus died for my sins.

After about 30 years as a believer, I got the impression that I must rent out my business and investigate what the complete Bible is about. This started the most exciting journey of our lives. It included the origins question. Either God supernaturally created the universe and all life in six days, or it evolved naturally by chance over billions and millions of years. Whichever a person believes, has a huge influence on his view of the Bible.

Our study of the Bible and evolution stretched over 12 years. It was a long, but exhilarating journey to understanding. At times it was hard work, but it really was worth it. The conclusions we came to were not made on the spur of the moment, or because it was the right thing to do. I was always a person who didn’t take things for granted, but wanted to know what it is all about? That applied to the Bible and evolution. In this journey of investigation my wife and I worked and studied together. The development of our relationship and teamwork surprised us beyond our expectations.

Our contention is that the origin of the Bible is supernatural, and that its message is so important that the devil does all he can to prevent people from believing the Bible. One of his main strategies is the idea of evolution, and he has many eager people to spread the gospel of Darwin. Evolution as it is spread around the globe cannot have a natural origin. It has so many flaws it can only be explained by the work of God’s enemy, the devil. As such, evolution is one of the best contemporary proofs that the Bible is true. It is unreal that so much trouble is taken only to disprove Genesis 1.

Our conclusion is exactly the opposite of the character in Dan Brown’s book who said, It [the Bible] is the product of man, my dear, not of God.2   The Bible is just too ‘abnormal’ and different to be the work of man alone.

Some of the questions we want to discuss:

  1. Why is the creation account in Genesis 1 vital?3
  2. Why is evolution so important in our times?
  3. Why is  Darwin regarded almost as a god, and worshipped by millions? The connection between Darwin and atheism.
  4. Why is there a ‘war’ between creation and evolution?
  5. Is God and evolution compatible?
  6. The difference between operational science and evolution.

We will discuss these six questions, and in subsequent blogs expand on them.

Why we write

Why we writeIn the debate between evolution and creation, the Bible (an old book of at least 2,000 years), has a prominent place, because it has much to say about the origin and development of the universe and life on earth.

Almost from the beginning the Bible was controversial. Many denied that it was the truth, while many more claimed it was the true words of an invisible God with a very important message to man. Thousands of books lauded its amazing content, while many others denounced it as forgery or fraud.

Today numerous people believe the words of one of the characters in Dan Brown’s book, The Da Vinci Code, ‘The Bible is a product of man, my dear. Not of God.’ 1  Atheists loath the Bible, evolutionists think it is a myth, other religions regard it is a fraud, while countless followers of Christ are confused about what to believe and what not. Even many theological colleges no longer teach the eternal value of the Bible and
deny that it is the true Word of God.

What do we propose to do?

We like to define concepts and expose some reasons for things we see in society. For example:

  • Why is there such an assault on the faith of millions of Bible believers?
  • Why is the Bible singled out for pernicious comments and aggressive tactics to silence it?

Anybody who proposes either that the Bible is the truth, or that evolution or atheism is logical, rational and scientific must at least present evidence that is:

  • Comprehensive
  • Consistent
  • Logical and understandable.

One cannot include, exclude, or use certain parts selectively (cherry picking). When we discuss the Bible, we understand it begins with Genesis 1 and ends with Revelation 22. All 66 books contribute to the message of God’s Kingdom plans for man. It gives a logical, understandable revelation from God. The same applies to cosmology, geology and biology. The explanations given by evolutionists should be scientifically supported. If only part of the issue is discussed, are we dealing with a cover-up, deceit or lies?

One cannot claim how life began and that it all makes sense, but you have to accept it by faith. The facts (of natural laws) must agree, or give legitimacy to the faith. In our times it is irrational to expect from especially the younger generation to  believe in the Bible by faith alone. There are too many voices yelling that it is not true.

One of the disadvantages of teaching evolution in schools, and not allowing any serious dissent or discussion, is that young people have lost their ability to think rationally and logically. We aim to demonstrate that the Bible is not some vague, mythical, fairy tale kind of a book, but a book that teaches about real life, and that the decisions we make here have consequences.
