What a story!

Ever contemplated this astounding proclamation in the book of Revelation,

‘And he [an angel] carried me [John] away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.’  Revelation 21:10

A city will descend from heaven to earth?  How big is that city?

‘The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide.  He [the angel] measured the city with a rod and found it to be 12,000 stadia in length, and as wide and high as it is long.’  Revelation 21:16

That means it will be a cube of about 1,400 miles or 2,200 kilometres.  Imagine a city that size that descends from heaven to settle on earth (probably on a mountain).

Amazingly its walls and streets are of pure gold and precious stones.  Its gates are pearls and a river flows from the throne of the Father and the Lamb.  On both sides of the river grows the tree of life that produces its crop every month (see Revelation 21 and 22).

Jesus says about the revelation God gave Him,

‘I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book.  And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.’  Revelation 22:18,19

What Jesus says is, don’t mess with this revelation.  It comes from the highest authority there can be, namely the Creator God.  He is all-knowing, planned it all and He guarantees what is written in the book of Revelation.

Our conclusion

We will see God’s face all the time.  We will have His Name written on our foreheads.  Revelation 22:4  We will be blessed beyond all blessings.  How?

‘Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy in this book.’  Revelation 22:7b

As you can see in the photo, there are two of us. We live and work together 24/7, studying and enjoying our grandchildren. Our passion is to know and understand what will happen after death. Is there a way to provide for and invest in that?

  1. By virtue of new testament scripture relating to my worship studies of the Tabernacle of God, I am convinced that the New Jerusalem is a Spiritual structure rather than a physical one. We, as born of the Spirit believers in Christ are the living stones built together to form the New Jerusalem, as a body corporate.
The transition from God living in inanimate structures ended at the crucifiction of Christ. We are now the living temple of God, the New Jerusalem being drawn together by the Holy Spirit.

  2. Thanks Pat for the comment. My thoughts:
Scripture is not set in stone. Many people differ on many aspects.
    For myself, the following:
If the New Jerusalem in the age to come is not literal, why would the new heaven and earth be?
If there is not a literal city where the throne of God and of the Lamb is, where will it be?
In his excellent book, ‘From Eden to the New Jerusalem,’ Desmond Alexander carefully explains that the Garden of Eden is in a sense a type of the New Jerusalem. Either both are literal, or neither is.
