There are people who claim that Jesus was an ordinary human being whom God ‘elevated’ to be the Son (capitol S) of God. If it is true that Jesus was an ordinary human whom God deified, then we have a very serious issue with God’s integrity. Favouring one specific ‘human’ being would be a charge against His holy character:
1. God has no favourites.
- ‘For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes.’ Deuteronomy 10:17
- “Then Peter began to speak: ‘I now realise how true it is that God does not show favouritism but accepts men from every nation who fear Him and do what is right.’” Acts 10:34
- ‘For God does not show favouritism.’ Romans 2:11
2. Favouritism destroys good governance
God’s governance demands no favouritism. Favouritism is, was and will be the scourge of human governments. That is not God’s way. He knows favouritism demands extra gifts, extra treatment, extra protection, et cetera. That is unfair to the ‘ordinary’ citizens.
3. God is a just God.
- ‘…He will govern the peoples with justice.’ Psalm 9:8b
- ‘It is unthinkable that God would do wrong, that the Almighty would pervert justice.’ Job 34:12
4. God treats all people the same.
- ‘He repays a man for what he has done; He brings upon him what his conduct deserves.’ Job 34:11
- ‘I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to what his deeds deserve.’ Jeremiah 17:10
- ‘God will give to each person according to what he has done.’ Romans 2:6
- ‘The dead were judged according to what they had dome as recorded in the books.’ Revelation 20:12b
Why would God then single out one person to become the divine Son of God? Does it mean that person is excluded from Judgment?
Conclusion
Jesus was not a man who became God, but God the Word who became the Son of Man for a very specific purpose to enable people to become children of God. Jesus came down, and went up again. He was not ‘down’ and was then ‘elevated.’
Amen
