An important principle in a genealogical list?

It is surprising how much theology is sometimes hidden in parts of the Victory in JesusBible that we think are not important. An example is the genealogical record of the offspring of Jacob. The tribes of the Reubenites, Gadites and half of Manasseh have an exciting recipe for success. 1

They waged war against the Hagrites (and others) and won. The reasons for the victory are as follows:

  • ‘They were helped in fighting them, and God handed the Hagrites and all their allies over to them, because they cried out to Him during the battle.’ 2
  • ‘He [God] answered their prayers, because they trusted in Him.’ 3
  • ‘…and many others fell slain, because the battle was God’s.’ 4

This is a recipe for success in life’s battles. Because they cried out to God, He heard. Because they trusted in Him, He did not disappoint them. Because the battle was God’s, victory was assured.

What a great lesson!  In the end times, the recipe is still the same, ‘They will make war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will overcome them because He is Lord of lords and King of kings – and with Him will be His called, chosen and faithful followers.’ 5

However, there is a reason the Bible emphasises faithfulness and perseverance. The fortunes of the once victorious tribes changed, ‘But they were unfaithful to the God of their fathers and prostituted themselves to the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God had destroyed before them.’ Eventually they were exiled. They lost their land and their freedom.

Exile is not what God plans for man. He wants people to be with Him in eternity. He has a wonderful promise in Revelation 2:7b, ‘To him who overcomes I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.’   The only way to be successful is to ‘fix our eyes on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith.’

God rewards His faithful followers. The reward will be eternal bliss. In all this, Jesus is the one who makes it possible. To Him be the glory!

As you can see in the photo, there are two of us. We live and work together 24/7, studying and enjoying our grandchildren. Our passion is to know and understand what will happen after death. Is there a way to provide for and invest in that?
