We are told that the universe was formed in the Big Bang about 13.5 billion years ago. Then our solar system and the earth formed from a swirling cloud of dust about 10 billion years later. It is a pity that neither Moses nor the Holy Spirit knew about it, when they wrote Genesis 1. So, without taking notice of modern evolutionary science, God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit just bravely created the earth first. God made the earth first for 3 reasons:
# 1. To be habitable. God made and prepared the earth like a developer of a massive security village with unlimited resources. Will a developer let his site lie fallow for decades before he begins? Why will he wait and bring in a few bricks and pipes every five or ten years? Will he not begin and build a site office and then develop the area with roads, electricity, water and sewage systems, boundary walls, trees and grass that make it suitable for people to buy stands? It is exactly the same with God. He created the earth first (and all the other heavenly bodies later). Then he created water, soil, plants and organisms, so that it was a fitting habitat for people. Finally He put man on earth with the command to rule over it.
# 2. As the only planet with life. According to the Bible God created the earth first, because it would be the only planet with life on it. Science (evolution) obviously has to disagree. It is looking for new habitable planets to prove that the earth was not created first and special. They find new ones almost every day. Then the fever is high, because a habitable planet will be the final nail in the coffin of the Creator God. Alas! Then they discover it was a mistake and the hype dies down. Yet they diligently continue the search. Will they stop this fruitless pursuit? Never. Anything is better than to acknowledge that God is real. We will just have to live with it, because it is part of the devil’s desperate attempt to fill hell by telling people there is no Creator God.
# 3. As His eternal headquarters. God created the present earth first in Genesis 1 and gave us a glimpse how beautiful and perfect His creation will be on the new, restored, glorious earth. This present earth is running down and cannot be saved. God’s intention is to ‘create new heavens and a new earth.’ 1 On those new heavens and earth, a miraculous thing will happen: “And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Now the dwelling of God is with men, and He will live with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them and be their God.’ 2
Isn’t it a wonderful blessing that the King of the Universe created a special planet and that He will live eternally on this ‘small, insignificant pale blue dot’ with His people?
