Atheists in general proclaim that they are free thinkers (Freethought). Apparently that means that they are independent thinkers who are reasonable and logical (and of course ‘scientific’). Some even call themselves the ‘Brights.’ It might be true, but there is one problem. They deny that the God of the Bible exists and that the Bible is the truth. Yet the actions of many of them closely resemble a person in the Bible.
The Bible tells us about a person, called Satan. His name means ‘adversary.’
He was one of God’s angels: ‘You were the model of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.’ 1
But he became proud and decided he wanted to be higher than God. ‘You said in your heart, I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God, I will…. I will make myself like the Most High.’ 2 He rebelled against God’s authority, deceived a multitude of angels to join him (they are known as demons) and organised a kingdom of darkness. His purpose it to oppose God’s plan for man — the eternal Kingdom of peace and happiness. He accomplishes that by opposing God’s Word, the Bible. We recognise him in the garden of Eden where he deceived Adam and Eve to question God’s words and disobey His command.
The Bible doctrine of a personal devil and demons has met with a storm of skepticism in recent years. Many in this supposed age of science and enlightenment dismiss the Bible’s claim as a remnant of medieval superstition. They treat the whole matter as an amusing joke. Despite that, why do they do as the devil did? Why are they not content to carry on with their lives and leave others alone to believe what they want?
Look at the following people:
- Guy Harrison’s book, 50 Questions for Christians. What does he question? The Bible.
- Richard Dawkins’ book, The God Delusion. What does he question? The Bible.
- One can take many of them. Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris, Michael Shermer, Dan Barker and Richard Carrier all do the same thing. They question the Bible.
They are free to do it, but it does strangely resemble the work of the devil and his demons. Why is that? It is because the Bible is about reality. It doesn’t fit under the label of ‘religion.’ In our modern scientific age, people act like the devil did thousands of years ago. Like him they ask, ‘Did God really say…?’ 3
If we look at the mounting war against God in the last two thousand years, we can only conclude that the Bible is true: ‘The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.’ 4
What happened in God’s Kingdom (the rebellion of the devil and his demons) is replicated before our eyes. The people who ‘trample’ on the Bible are influenced by that same spirit of rebellion. It is amazing that people who deny the Bible, do exactly the same as God’s enemy.
