Atheists like to explain that Christians don’t believe in Zeus, the many gods of the Hindus,
the animists’ deities and all the other gods. So they (atheists) only believe in one less god than Christians. Guy Harrison writes, ‘…how can we fairly reject the unproven god claims of Hindus or animists while accepting the unproven god claims of Christians or Muslims?’ 1 What he means is that there are reports of many gods, so how can Christians just disclaim them, and claim that their deity is the only true God? ‘To speak as if only one god is relevant and important for discussion and debate is intellectually indefensible.’ 2
He claims that, ‘It makes no sense to discuss Christianity in a vacuum, however, as if there isn’t a vast and incomprehensible catalog of religions, a crowd of diverse gods that stretches far beyond history’s horizon, and an endless stream of very different and often-contradictory religious claims.’ 3 He reckons that it is impossible to estimate how many gods there are, but there must be many millions.4
What is our answer? The issue is, how does one distinguish which gods are valid? The litmus test is: which god has a historically reliable book and an existing geographical country? For some reason, which seems inexplicable, there is only one God that answers to those requirements. It is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. His historically reliable book is the Bible and the geographical country is Israel. Why are there no other books like the Bible? Why doesn’t even the Koran pass the test?
The Bible gives a simple and clear answer, “Tell them this: ‘These gods, who did not make the heavens and the earth, will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.’” 5 Because God is the Creator of the earth, people and time, He can give us a historical revelation, something none of the other gods have done.
There is another reason why the God of the Bible is the only true God. He has an enemy who hates Him. That enemy, the devil, influences people to war against the Bible and God. The devil is real and under his influence the world concentrates its attacks only against the Bible. Guy Harrison is not going to write hundreds of books with 50 questions for the adherents of each different god. Neither does the world attack all these gods on the web, or in books and videos, et cetera. There is no reason for it. Only one historical book witnesses about a powerful Creator God.
Conclusion:To compare the God of the Bible with millions of other gods, is ridiculous. Where are their books like the Bible? When they have produced a book that is comparable to the Bible, then we can reconsider. Until then, rest assured that the God of the Bible is the only true God.
