Michael Dowd and his wife Connie are evangelists that spread the basic message, ‘Thank God for evolution.’ For 12 years they have travelled North America with this message. He has written a book, ‘Thank God for Evolution.’ In it he is said to productively blend spirituality and science. According to Wikipedia the Dowd vehicle displays two fishes kissing with the labels ‘Jesus’ and ‘Darwin.’
Frank Wilczek, a 2004 Nobel Prize winner, commented on the book: ‘Honest students of God should welcome the revelations of science as insights, not fear them as threats. Here is a book in that spirit by a minister who takes evolution to heart, and celebrates it.’ The question is, should we welcome it?
Jesus said, ‘Enter through the narrow gate.’ 1 It seems as if this verse also applies to strange doctrines. We should be very careful, so it is wise to look at what Dowd teaches:
- The first aspect is that he believes in evolution. That means he accepts that God used the billions of years of evolution to create the heavens and the earth. This is a flat out contradiction of what the Bible teaches. It declares that God created the heavens and the earth in six days.2
- God created by words: ‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…. Through Him [the Word] all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made.’ 3 In Jeremiah 10:11 God says, “Tell them this; ‘These gods, who did not make the heavens and the earth, will perish from the earth and from under heaven.'” Dowd’s god is not the Creator God that the Bible reveals. Only the Creator God has the power to create the new heavens and earth where His followers will spend eternity, not the evolutionary god of Dowd.
What is the inspiration for Michael Dowd to spread his faulty message? In 2 Corinthians 11:1-14 Paul discusses false apostles, who masquerade as apostles of Christ. He refers to the devil who masquerades as an angel of light, and then he writes, ‘It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.’ 4
Now that sounds very harsh towards Dowd. It is very harsh, because it has to do with people’s eternal destiny. To miss it because you believed in some evolutionary god who cannot, in 100 or 500 billion years, create the new heavens and earth, will be devastating. That is why Paul was so harsh in his condemnation of false preachers, ‘Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned.’ 5
Jesus is the Creator of the heavens and the earth.6 He did not use evolution, since evolution is a belief system that is still devoid of facts.
Should we welcome Dowd’s preaching? No! Please cling to the King (Jesus, the Creator). That means, believe in God’s Word as it was handed down to us. Do not contaminate it by strange doctrines and ideas.
